Clinical Innovation in Simulation

A Swansea University student has secured funding to develop an innovative simulation project alongside his anaesthetics training.

Working with Swansea University’s Simulation and Immersive Learning Centre (SUSIM), academic Dr William Dace will undertake research as a Welsh Clinical Academic Track (WCAT) trainee, supported by ring-fenced investment from the Welsh Government. The research will aim to enhance theatre team preparation for high-risk, low-frequency emergencies – known as High Acuity, Low Occurrence (HALO) events – scenarios like anaphylaxis or airway obstruction that are rare but demand rapid, competent intervention.

Traditionally, simulation-based education for these events relies heavily on dedicated simulation labs, expert educators, and empty clinical spaces, which are all often in short supply. This PhD project proposes a more sustainable and scalable approach: the development of an in situ HALO simulation compendium delivered through an app. 

This toolkit will be designed, in conjunction with clinicians and patients, for use in the actual clinical environment – promoting cohesion without disrupting patient care. Through a philosophy of sharing the mental model in a safe and controlled environment, the toolkit will prime teams to deliver high quality, tailored care for anaesthetised patients in the rare event a real emergency arises, with the goal of improving patient outcomes while minimising training costs and logistical barriers. 

William’s PhD will answer whether it is possible to embed this readiness training intervention within the clinical setting, evaluating the impacts on patients, theatre teams, and healthcare organisations. Importantly, it will assess safety and cost-effectiveness to determine if this approach can be sustained and scaled across NHS Wales and beyond. The WCAT programme demonstrates how strategic investment in clinical academic training can support research teams striving to develop real-world solutions to long-standing healthcare challenges.
