Ospreys Rugby and Swansea University announce ground-breaking new partnership

We are proud to announce a ground-breaking new partnership that will see Wales’ most successful rugby region transform the planning and operation of Swansea University’s men’s rugby programme.

This marks a first-of-its-kind collaboration between professional rugby and higher education in Wales, bringing elite performance standards and player development expertise into the heart of university sport.

Under the new partnership, Swansea University’s men’s rugby programme will be developed and operated to elite, professional standards by dedicated Ospreys personnel. The programme will benefit from ongoing input from the Ospreys’ academy and senior squad staff, ensuring players receive the highest quality coaching, performance support, and athlete welfare provision.

Once complete, the redevelopment of the historic St Helen’s ground – part of the wider NISH project – will provide students with access to world-class facilities and a genuine professional rugby environment.

The partnership creates a clear, structured pathway from university rugby to the professional game, allowing students to compete at a high level in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) league, with the opportunity to progress into Super Rygbi Cymru and beyond.

It also reflects Ospreys Rugby’s ongoing commitment to player development and Welsh talent retention, ensuring promising athletes can continue their education while benefiting from professional-standard coaching and support within Wales.

The enhanced rugby provision will be highly attractive to students from across the UK and internationally, offering a unique opportunity to combine academic study with elite sporting development. For Welsh players, it provides the chance to remain in Wales – pursuing higher education while continuing to develop in a high-performance rugby environment.

Announcing the partnership, Ospreys Chief Executive Officer, Lance Bradley, said:

“We have been working with Swansea University for many years, so this new programme was a natural progression. We are firm believers in the value of investing in the player pathway, and this is further demonstration of our commitment to that.

“It enables us to both retain and attract talented young players to Swansea University, and for the Ospreys to have significant input to their rugby development. It presents opportunities for those players to not only compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) league, but also potentially to progress to Super Rygbi Cymru, thereby contributing to the ongoing success of that league.

“The most talented students will have the opportunity to join our academy, as was the case with Max Nagy – now not only an Ospreys first team regular, but also Welsh qualified through the 5 year residency rules. “We look forward to introducing a similar women’s programme at the University once the plan for women’s rugby in Wales is decided.”

Professor Keith Lloyd, Director of the National Institute of Sport & Health, added:

“This partnership represents a major step forward for university sport in Wales. By bringing the expertise and professionalism of Ospreys Rugby into our rugby programme, we’re creating an environment that combines academic excellence with elite-level performance support.

It’s a model that embodies what NISH stands for – using research, innovation, and collaboration to help athletes reach their full potential both on and off the field. We’re incredibly proud to be part of an initiative that strengthens Welsh rugby and enhances opportunities for our students.”

This partnership strengthens the alignment between Ospreys Rugby, Swansea University, and NISH, reflecting their shared mission to advance sport performance, education, and community development.

It also positions Ospreys Rugby as an industry leader in player development, setting a new benchmark for collaboration between professional sport and higher education.
