Fully-funded MSc Scholarship: Challenging stereotypes and barriers to Sport participation

Swansea University is seeking candidates to undertake a fully-funded MSc by Research scholarship focused on evaluating the impact of the #IfYouGoIGo campaign, a physical activity initiative designed to support teenage girls across Torfaen County Borough.

This exciting project is funded by Torfaen County Council and brings together researchers from Swansea Uni’s Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the Welsh Institute of Physical Activity, Health and Sport (WIPAHS), and practitioners from Torfaen County Borough Council and Torfaen Leisure Trust.

The successful candidate will work closely with teenage girls participating in the #IfYouGoIGo programme, alongside community partners and service providers, to evaluate how the initiative supports physical activity participation, health, and well-being among girls aged 13-18 years.

The campaign delivers a free 10-week programme combining weekly group sessions with personalised one-to-one mentoring, guidance, and support. Participants also gain access to local leisure facilities, gyms, fitness classes, and community sports clubs, with the aim of encouraging long-term healthy lifestyle behaviours.

This MSc project will explore opportunities to strengthen and streamline current evaluation and data collection approaches, including assessing the programme’s short- and long-term impact on physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life, as well as its wider economic and social value.

Empirical research using both qualitative and quantitative methods will be designed and conducted to assess the effectiveness of the programme and inform recommendations for future development. The successful candidate will ultimately oversee the production of a comprehensive independent evaluation report.

The researcher will work collaboratively with the Torfaen Sports Development Team and will be based between the Council’s Pontypool site, and WIPAHS on Swansea University’s Bay Campus.

The scholarship will begin in October 2026.
