The comprehensive Health Needs Assessment<\/a> (HNA) that we recently worked on with ARCH<\/a>, Swansea Bay University Health Board and Hywel Dda University Health Board, has been pivotal in identifying key health challenges within the region, informing subsequent activities, such as our Health Insights Workshops<\/a> and the ARCH Innovation Forum. We spoke to Sophie Marr, ARCH’s Business Manager, about the impact the assessment has had so far…<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ARCH region encompasses Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea, and Neath Port Talbot, and the HNA aimed to address regional health challenges through innovative solutions The HNA highlighted several critical health challenges, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, mental health issues<\/strong>, and lifestyle risk factors such as smoking<\/strong> and obesity<\/strong>. These challenges are exacerbated by health inequalities and the unique needs of underserved and rural populations. Technology can play a significant role in addressing these issues. For example, digital health solutions and telemedicine initiatives are underway looking to improve access to care and patient outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the publication of the HNA, there has been a concerted effort to implement the findings into actionable strategies. The ARCH Innovation Forum has been re-established to accelerate innovation across the health and care sector. Additionally, the Health Insights Workshops facilitated collaboration among stakeholders, fostering a deeper understanding of community health needs and driving forward innovative solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings from the HNA have enabled deeper insights into the population groups across the region and identified key health and wellbeing needs. These recommendations are actively informing service planning within healthcare settings, including Swansea University\u2019s Health and Wellbeing Academy<\/a>. They are also contributing to the implementation of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act, helping healthcare professionals tailor services to meet the specific needs of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HNA is supporting the development of a Carmarthenshire Prevention Strategy by Hywel Dda University Health Board, offering crucial insights into prevalent challenges and priority areas for preventive interventions. Moving forward, the HNA will play a pivotal role in guiding planning efforts at the National Network for Innovation in Sport & Health to ensure that developments and services have the greatest possible impact in mitigating health disparities across the ARCH region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ARCH Innovation Forum<\/a> is a collaborative platform involving Hywel Dda University Health Board<\/a>, Swansea Bay University Health Board<\/a>, and Swansea University<\/a>. It aims to accelerate innovation in the health and care sector in South West Wales by connecting innovators with medical, academic, and industry experts. The Forum provides a safe space for innovators to present their ideas, receive constructive feedback, and connect with support resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last ARCH Innovation Forum, held in February 2025, showcased several promising projects. Five successful applicants presented their innovations, which included ideas for service innovation, early development products, and pre-regulatory products needing clinical and operational input. The Forum facilitated discussions, Q&A sessions, and feedback from a panel of experts, helping innovators refine their projects and connect with necessary support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
