{"id":4178,"date":"2024-03-12T09:59:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-12T09:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nish.wales\/?p=4178"},"modified":"2026-03-12T11:14:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T11:14:16","slug":"case-study-using-rubbing-oils-for-pain-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nish.wales\/en\/2024\/03\/12\/case-study-using-rubbing-oils-for-pain-relief\/","title":{"rendered":"Case Study: Using rubbing oils for pain relief"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Essential Skin and Body Butters (ESBB) is a company\u00a0based in Neath Port Talbot in South Wales.\u00a0 The company manufactures\u00a0a range of body butters and rubbing oils for cosmetic and potentially medicinal benefits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company contacted Swansea University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/medicine\/enterprise-and-innovation\/business-support-projects\/accelerate-healthcare-technology-centre\/\">Healthcare Technology Centre<\/a> (HTC) for scientific support to determine\u00a0whether the rubbing oil mixtures can result in pain relief through the transdermal uptake of active ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HTC provided ESBB with essential support and guidance on how to bring cosmetic products to market within the UK, supporting the generation of a new enterprise in Wales.\u00a0Initial data was also provided to look into how these rubbing oils might have a positive effect on pain management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A literature review was compiled detailing the process to bring a cosmetic product to market within the UK. A second literature review was compiled detailing how medicinal linked products could be brought to market within the UK, via MHRA guidelines and potentially THR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternative formulations of the rubbing oils were investigated to try and improve detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through true collaboration, Essential Skin and Body Butters began trading as a sole trader and has brought four new cosmetic products to market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Barbara Waters, Owner:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI found the collaboration with HTC fascinating in the way they went about exploring the possible effectiveness of the essential oils I had chosen for this project. I do not have a scientific background and it gave a completely new perspective which was essential in knowing if my recipe was going to be effective.
