{"id":4207,"date":"2024-03-13T10:15:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T10:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nish.wales\/?p=4207"},"modified":"2026-03-13T10:17:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T10:17:07","slug":"case-study-a-multi-disciplinary-collaboration-supporting-people-who-use-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nish.wales\/en\/2024\/03\/13\/case-study-a-multi-disciplinary-collaboration-supporting-people-who-use-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Case Study: A multi-disciplinary collaboration supporting people who use drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaleidoscope68.org\">Kaleidoscope<\/a> is the largest provider of support services to people who use drugs in Wales.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have been part of an informal working group, including members of the Swansea University School of Pharmacy, and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, looking at challenges&nbsp;around drug dispensing for therapy and rehabilitation, during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dispensing these theraputic drugs in a safe way has been a big problem people who are undergoing therapy and presenting a seperate set of challenges for the prescribing pharmacists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A need was identified for a secure take-home dispenser for multiple doses of a theraputic drug to prevent accidental or deliberate overdose or misuse, but no suitable device is currently available. Such a device needs to meet multiple complex requirements for safety, accuracy, and usability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/medicine\/enterprise-and-innovation\/business-support-projects\/accelerate-healthcare-technology-centre\/\">Healthcare Technology Centre<\/a> (HTC)\u00a0helped to establish the\u00a0dispenser requirement specification\u00a0and developed a proof-of-concept prototype. Further support has sought stakeholder approval and manufacturer interest.<br>\u00a0<br>HTC is supporting Kaleidoscope\u2019s plan for MHRA approval and assisting with two applications for further development funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kaleidoscope is the largest provider of support services to people who use drugs in Wales.
