{"id":4211,"date":"2023-03-13T10:20:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-13T10:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nish.wales\/?p=4211"},"modified":"2026-03-13T15:06:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T15:06:48","slug":"case-study-a-wireless-communication-device-to-support-nhs-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nish.wales\/en\/2023\/03\/13\/case-study-a-wireless-communication-device-to-support-nhs-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Case Study: A wireless communication device to support NHS staff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>MaskComms is a collaboration between industry, health, and academia that specialise in the design of mask-wearing equipment to aid communication professionals in the hospital environment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team\u00a0is led by\u00a0Dr Simon Burnell &#8211; Consultant Anaesthetist, and consists of Wyn Griffith\u00a0&#8211; Product Design Engineer\u00a0and\u00a0Thomas Turner\u00a0\u2013 Product Designer,\u00a0is supported by\u00a0by\u202fAwyr\u202fLas, Santander and Swansea University&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/medicine\/enterprise-and-innovation\/business-support-projects\/accelerate-healthcare-technology-centre\/\">Healthcare Technology Centre<\/a> (HTC) to support the team\u00a0tackle the challenges around mask-wearing errors during the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communication is significantly impaired when wearing PPE facemasks due to the muffling of the voice and significant reduction in facial cues further reducing the effectiveness of communication and increasing the likelihood of errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MaskComms&nbsp;identified the need for a&nbsp;microphone&nbsp;device&nbsp;which will be designed to be small enough to fit inside any PPE face mask and transmit voice through wireless to a wearable loudspeaker. It will provide a customisable platform where a mask-wearing group of healthcare professionals can communicate easily in the hospital environment, such as during a surgical procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HTC\u00a0has\u00a0helped to establish\u00a0a comprehensive literature\u00a0providing details\u00a0on commercially available short-range wireless audio communication systems.\u00a0This knowledge was then utilised by HTC to prepare and develop the\u00a0MaskComms\u00a0device; creating four functional prototypes with\u00a0real-time voice to text conversion software.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MaskComms is a collaboration between industry, health, and academia that specialise in the design of mask-wearing equipment to aid communication professionals in the hospital environment.
