Swansea University’s Simulation & Immersive Learning Centre (SUSIM) is a pioneering hub in Wales, spearheading advancements in medical education through the world’s largest installation of immersive wall technology. Since opening in September 2023, SUSIM has offered a transformative approach to training, blending virtual reality (VR), advanced simulation suites, and gamification to thousands learners in order to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. This state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to enhancing the quality of healthcare education and training and ensuring the high-quality and safe patient care in Wales and beyond.
Recruiting, training, and retaining skilled medical staff is a significant challenge. Traditional methods of medical education, which often rely on theoretical learning with limited hands-on practice, can leave gaps in real-world readiness. The fast-paced evolution of healthcare also requires practitioners to continuously update their skills and knowledge to provide the best care possible. The was a clear need for an innovative approach to training that can simulate real-life scenarios in a safe environment, so international simulation expert Jo Davies established SUSIM.
SUSIM addresses these challenges by offering a highly realistic and immersive learning environment that allows learners to gain hands-on experience in a controlled setting. The centre features four distinct zones, each designed to facilitate a wide range of activities, including education, research, industry training, and innovation. These zones can project a variety of images and incorporate audio, sensory, video, and even olfactory elements to create a fully immersive experience. This advanced setup enables learners to suspend disbelief, fully engage in scenarios, and transfer their learning effectively into real-world practice.
SUSIM’s team of specialists uses this technology to provide indispensable training to produce competent and confident healthcare professionals. The centre’s commitment to innovative and simulated experiences enhances the skills of current practitioners and inspires students to pursue STEM pathways.
Since its inception, SUSIM has made a significant impact on the medical education landscape. Over 2,000 individuals, including students, health board members, industry leaders, and VIPs, have toured the centre, forging important relationships and opening doors for future collaborations. The demand for SUSIM’s simulation opportunities has grown rapidly, reflecting its success in meeting the needs of both academia and the healthcare industry.
The centre’s influence extends beyond Swansea, with industry partners such as Vodafone, RESCAPE, Imersifi, CAE, and Echo Health showing strong interest in collaboration. These partnerships have already led to the securing of major research and innovation projects, including a £1.3 million VR initiative and multiple contracts with local health boards. Such collaborations highlight SUSIM’s role in advancing healthcare training through technology.
In addition to this, SUSIM’s work with local health boards has resulted in significant advancements in training outcomes, particularly in areas like Intensive Care, Surgical Training, and Primary and Community Care. To date, over 300 Swansea Uni staff members and health board educators have been certified through SUSIM.
By leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative teaching methods, SUSIM is shaping the future of healthcare in Wales and beyond. Through its continued dedication to excellence, SUSIM is setting new standards for what is possible in the training of healthcare professionals.
