Strengthening Healthcare Training in Zambia Using Clinical Simulation

Swansea University has been actively engaging in collaborative initiatives with Zambia, focusing on healthcare innovation and education. The project includes enhancing clinical simulation training in Zambia to improve healthcare education and patient safety.

In August 2023, a team from Swansea University Medical School visited Zambia to conduct workshops on clinical simulation for local doctors, nurses, and midwives. Clinical simulation allows healthcare professionals to practice and refine their skills in a controlled environment, reducing risks to actual patients. This training is particularly crucial in regions facing shortages of trained healthcare workers, as it provides a safe platform for practitioners to gain confidence and competence.

The workshops, hosted by the charity SolidarMed, were well-received by Zambian clinical instructors, who participated with enthusiasm. The collaboration aims to establish Zambia as a leader in clinical simulation training within the region, with ongoing partnerships anticipated to further this goal.

The University’s Simulation and Immersive Learning Centre (SUSIM) boasts significant expertise in clinical simulation as it integrates various simulation methods across clinical, health, and social care programs, including:

  • Simulated Patient Actors: Individuals trained to portray patients, providing realistic interactions for learners.
  • Manikin-Based Simulation: Utilising low to high-tech manikins to simulate clinical scenarios.
  • Hybrid Simulation: Combining multiple simulation methods for comprehensive training experiences.
  • Augmented and Virtual Realities: Employing advanced technologies to create immersive learning environments.

The centre’s comprehensive approach ensures that students and professionals are well-prepared for real-world clinical situations.

The University’s engagement with Zambia extends beyond clinical simulation. Since 2008, Swansea has been involved in the Swansea-Siavonga Partnership, a collaboration aimed at building relationships across cultures, supporting education, and improving health through environmental initiatives. This partnership has facilitated various projects, including educational exchanges and community development programs, strengthening ties between Swansea and the Siavonga region.

This projects exemplifies the University’s global health innovation and education by contributing to the development of healthcare systems and the enhancement of professional training in Zambia.
