Advanced Management (Sport Business and Leadership)

The innovative and forward-looking MSc Advanced Management (Sport Business and Leadership) has been designed specifically with sporting professionals and athletes in mind.

The course has been developed to support senior and aspiring leaders within sporting organisations, whilst also being highly relevant to athletes wanting to diversify their skill set (off the pitch), with skills and approaches that can be implemented in their organisation or entrepreneurial venture.

The programme is designed for individuals who are:

  • Currently working in sporting organisations in the sporting sector, who are looking for a formal management or leadership qualification to take their career to the next level.
  • Professional or semi-professional athletes, thinking about developing their management and entrepreneurial skills, ready for life after retirement from professional sport.
  • Looking to build a career in the sporting sector.

Taught over two years part-time, this MSc has been constructed to provide opportunities to develop critical skills while building a management-focused mindset. Teaching is based on recognised fundamental management theory, which is applied in a manner that is specific to the sporting sector.

Providing a unique blend of theoretical concepts and practical application, the programme offers sport-specific modules that bring theory to life by using real-life case studies to demonstrate how this theory is applied, while offering numerous opportunities to build practical management skills.

This sport-focused pathway of our Advanced Management programme offers accessible and blended flexible learning, to cater for the potentially complex needs of sporting professionals, allowing for learning to be built around existing professional commitments.

Advanced Management (Healthcare Technologies)

The MSc Advanced Management (Healthcare Technologies) has been designed to meet the growing global demand for leadership, innovation and strategic management skills within the life sciences and biotechnology sectors.

Our programme will equip you with the expertise needed to navigate complex innovation pathways, from discovery and research through to product development and regulation towards commercialisation.

It is designed for professionals and aspiring leaders who aim to translate scientific and technological advances into sustainable, ethical and impactful solutions for society.

    Sport, Media and Culture

    Our Sport, Media and Culture, BA (Hons) degree programme equips you with the skills for a future career as a professional sports content creator and communicator across the contemporary sports mediascape.

    This highly practical course allows you to study subjects such as sports journalism, sports commentary, and sports promotion. Through the study of theoretical constructs such as fandom, sports journalism, national identity and sports narratives, students will see how our abiding interest in sport has shaped how we view the world. Students will always develop a robust understanding of the contemporary sports mediascape.

    Changes in how we consume sport means that the traditional legacy media model (newspapers, TV broadcasts, radio) has been hugely interrupted, with many sports organisations now opting to communicate directly with fans. Simply knowing how to write a match report or interview the triumphant winner and the beaten rival is no longer enough.

    With all this in mind, this course has been developed to ensure you will graduate as a skilled and competent sports content creator, equipped with journalistic skills, and adept at creating and promoting multi-media sports-focused content, from podcasts to match reports and from sports commentary to promotional sports communication strategies.

    Occupational Therapy

    Our Occupational Therapy course will give you the skills and experience to launch a rewarding career in this diverse and essential profession.

    Occupational therapists work to empower people to develop, maintain or improve a diverse range of activities that are relevant and meaningful in their daily lives, from basic self-care at home to work-related activities, hobbies and more.  Throughout this integrated course, you will learn the skills to help people overcome difficulties caused by illness, disability, accidents or ageing.  This could involve the use of aids and adaptations, modifying tasks or developing new skills.  

    The course follows a spiral design based around 5 key curriculum themes to help you develop the knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence required to be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to become a registered occupational therapist:

    Advanced Sport Performance Science

    This MSc in Advanced Sport Performance Science has developed a track record in successfully preparing students for employment in high performance sport or progression towards doctoral research (PhD) degrees.

    Fundamentally, this programme equips students with the underpinning theoretical knowledge and practical skills across performance science domains. Students will develop core competencies across applied data science, training science, recovery science, competition day strategies and performance planning.

    Uniquely, this MSc includes a 12-month placement allocation with one of our industry partners in elite football, rugby, swimming, tennis and applied data analytics. These invaluable placement experiences significantly enhance our students’ employability prospects, preparing our graduates to pursue their desired career path.

    Clinical Exercise Physiology

    There has never been a more exciting time to study an MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology. As the NHS and other healthcare providers are put under an increasing burden from long-term health conditions related to physical inactivity, the demand for graduates with skills in clinical exercise science and physiology is growing.

    This 1-year full-time master’s course will equip you with the critical research-informed knowledge and understanding, along with the diverse range of applied and practical skills, that are needed to work with patients to optimise health, physical function, and quality of life through physical activity and exercise.

    The MSc will have a heavy practical emphasis and will develop your practical competencies in a wide range of physiological and phenotypic measurements related to clinical exercise physiology. Throughout the programme, you will learn how to design, conduct and interpret a range of disease-specific health and fitness assessments, as well as designing and delivering evidence-based physical activity and exercise interventions, supporting patients to promote meaningful behaviour change, optimising the prevention, treatment and long-term management of a range of complex health conditions.

    You will also complete a clinical placement module to gain important supervised experience in applying your skillset in real-world settings.

    Sport Psychology

    Through a combination of research, theory, and practical insights, the MSc in Sport Psychology is a comprehensive and dynamic course designed to equip you with the core knowledge, practical skills, and competence required to subsequently become ethically, empirically, and theoretically-based scientist practitioners in the field of sport psychology.

    Students will engage with a range of topics across the eight core competencies of psychology, ranging from social and cognitive psychology to developmental psychology. A strong emphasis will be placed on providing students with guidance and insight regarding working as an applied practitioner within this field.

    Sports Coaching and Performance

    Swansea University are working with Gower College to deliver the BA (Hons) Sports Coaching and Performance programme.

    Explore the dynamic world of sport coaching and performance in our BA programme, designed to cultivate a deep understanding of athletic development and strategic coaching techniques. Delve into the psychology of sports, ethics, wellbeing, technology and performance analysis, gaining hands-on experience in designing effective training programmes.
